Top Model TV's BBC girl about town Amy Shead takes an in-depth look at the men, and women, who influence our style (and purses!) on a daily basis.
This time out it's... BETSEY JOHNSON.
Dressed in stripy monochrome leggings, a yellow cycling t-shirt and a chequered cap, the extrovert fashion designer Betsey Johnson ensured that she created the ultimate finale by cartwheeling down the catwalk at New York Fashion Week.
With simple activities such as a ‘relaxed bike ride through New York’
apparently being her inspiration, the designer presented series of mini collections. Some were channeled on Brooklyn’s punk rock scene and another on News Years Eve in Times Square. She wowed the audience with flowing ball gowns and sailor skirts, proving her motto ‘fashion is nothing if it’s not about having fun’.
Born August 10th 1942, Johnson is still said by many to be one of the top ten fashion designers in the world. Her designs are often described as being ‘over the top’ and embellished, but the ‘punky’ yet appealing appearance of her creations still prove to be popular with all age groups both in America and internationally.
Johnson made her mark on the fashion map in the sixties and seventies. After graduating from Syracuse University her career began when she spent a summer as an intern at Mademoiselle magazine. Before long she won the Mademoiselle Guest Editor Contest, and within a year she was the in-house designer for the Manhattan boutique Paraphernalia.
Betsey Johnson. Still fabulous at 69!
The frilly, retro and ‘Warholian’ feel of her designs relate back to Johnson’s involvement with the youthquake fashion movement, and Andy Warhol’s underground scene, where Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground are also renowned for being a part of.
In 1978, Johnson started her own fashion line with ex-model Chantal Bacon. Her first collection was a success, however the second one failed miserably. In great response to this, Johnson opened her own retail store, with forty-five of them still going strong to this day worldwide.
Taking a look at the collections on her website, from the wonderfully cute little black numbers, to the rockin’ t-shirt dresses, glitzy bags and glamorous accessories, there really is something to suit everyone.
The National Arts Club of America awarded Betsey Johnson the 2009 Medal of Honor for Lifetime Achievement in Fashion. She once described her style as a formula... ‘Take a leotard and add a skirt’.
